Sworn Affidavits & Statutory Declarations in Ontario
An affidavit or statutory declaration is a written statement of facts that you swear or affirm to be true. Whether you are finalizing a divorce, sponsoring a family member for immigration, or declaring a lost passport, our licensed Ontario commissioners of oaths are here to ensure your documents are legally binding and properly executed.
Common Affidavits We Commission
- OSAP Affidavits: For students declaring marital status or sole support parent status.
- Family Law: Sworn statements for divorce, child custody, and support proceedings in Ontario courts.
- Immigration (IRCC): Letters of invitation, sponsorship declarations, and translation affidavits.
- Vehicle Transfers: Ministry of Transportation (MTO) family gift declarations for used vehicles.
- Name Change Applications: Statutory declarations required by ServiceOntario.
- Lost Document Declarations: For lost passports, PR cards, or bank drafts.
The Notarization Process: What to Expect
Commissioning an oath is a serious legal process. Here is how we make it seamless for you:
- Do Not Sign Yet: You must sign the document in the physical or virtual presence of the notary.
- ID Verification: Present a valid, unexpired piece of government-issued photo ID (e.g., Ontario Driver's License or Passport).
- The Oath: The notary will ask you to swear on a religious text or make a secular affirmation that the contents of your document are true.
- Stamping & Signing: We will sign and apply our embossed seal to the document.
Drafting vs. Commissioning
Important Note: We act as commissioners of oaths, meaning we verify your identity and witness your signature. We do not draft the contents of your affidavit or provide legal advice. Please ensure your document is fully filled out (except for the signature) before your appointment.
